TYLER, Texas - Looking for its first win of the season, the Centenary volleyball team will journey to the UT Tyler Tournament for two games Friday and wrap up with two more Saturday.
The young Ladies squad (0-4) dropped all four of their contests at the UT Dallas Tournament last week, winning just one set. Centenary opens with familiar opponents Friday against LeTourneau (1-3) at 12:30 p.m., followed by a 3:30 contest against Mary Hardin-Baylor (3-1).
"Our girls are really excited about the rematch against LeTourneau," third-year head coach Jon Stenman said. "We feel we had some mental lapses that added to our struggles.
"We really focused on attention to detail as far as defensive positioning and service receiving positioning. By fixing these problems, we're expecting a much better showing this weekend."
The tournament wraps up for Centenary Saturday with a 1 o'clock match against ETBU (0-3) and a 2:30 contest against host UT Tyler (2-2).
Sarah Sumner topped the Ladies charts last weekend with 25 total kills, averaging 1.92 kills per set, also a team-best mark. Brooke Bahlinger wasn't far behind with 1.82 kills per set and led the team with 84 total attacks. Junior setter Beth Nuttall posted 62 assists, 4.77 per frame.
Defensively, lone senior Jesi Wilcox posted 59 digs, besting Bahlinger's 24 and Nuttall's 22. Freshman Sarah Irons and Sumner topped the team tally in blocks with seven and six, respectively.
The Ladies make their first home appearance Sept. 11 in the first of four tri-matches at the Gold Dome. Centenary hosts Belhaven at 5 p.m. before taking on Mississippi College at 7. The two begin the tri-match with a 3 p.m. contest.
