INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Centenary softball team had to come back twice, but a three-run eighth inning was enough for a 9-6 win over Summit League foe IUPUI on a cold and wet Friday afternoon.
The Ladies (25-14, 8-3) spotted IUPUI (3-35, 1-12) a 3-0 lead after two innings, but six runs over the next three frames pushed Centenary to a 6-3 advantage. Two of the Ladies' runs came from freshman Jenny Varteressian, who homered to left centerfield.
Taking their three-run lead into the bottom half of the seventh, the Ladies got two quick outs, but an error gave IUPUI new life. After a walk and the error Mia Ettl put a three-run home run over the right centerfield fence to tie the game.
In the eighth, Centenary scored the winning run after a throwing error, which plated freshman Lindsey Smith. Later in the inning, classmate Kalyn Harris knocked in a run and senior Allison McClain would also score to give the Ladies two insurance runs.
Centenary and IUPUI will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday morning beginning at 11 a.m.
