SHREVEPORT - A pair of dominating pitching performances by sophomore Jessica Bock and freshman Hillary Phillips got the Centenary softball team a doubleheader sweep of Summit League foe UMKC on Monday night. Ladies were winners in game one 1-0 and in the night cap they came away with a 3-0 victory.
Game One
It took eight innings and a freshman Jenny Varteressian run scoring out to push across the only tally in the game. However, it was a nobody out and bases loaded situation for Centenary's (20-10, 3-1) defense that changed the game.
In the third inning with the 'Roos (5-22, 0-8) threatening to blow the game open, sophomore Caitlin Cavarra turned a momentum changing double play. The very next play Bock got UMKC's next batter to pop out to senior Emerald Doria's waiting glove.
Bock (11-5) notched her 11 victory of the season after pitching eight innings and scattering nine hits to go along with three strikeouts.
Game Two
Junior Haley Bassett and senior Allison McClain pulled the double steal off to perfection, which led to Centenary's first run of the game in the fifth. In the next inning, sophomore Bonnie Matak put the game out of a each with an RBI single and then later scored on an error by the right fielder.
Phillips (9-4) pitched outstanding to win her ninth game of the season, as she fanned nine and allowed just six base runners.
Tuesday's game has been changed to 9:30 a.m. due to the impending inclement weather that is supposed to hit Shreveport in the afternoon. Both coaching staffs agreed on the time change, and the contest will still be broadcast on www.GoCentenary.com.
