SHREVEPORT �- Junior Haley Bassett knocked in five RBIs to help push the Centenary softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Summit League foe South Dakota State on Friday evening. The Ladies were winners in game one 7-2 and they took the night cap by a 4-2 margin.
Game one
Centenary (23-13, 6-3) spotted the Jackrabbits a 2-0 first inning lead, but Bassett came up in the second and put the Ladies up for good with a three run bomb. In the third, freshman Katie Matthews put a two spot on the board with her fifth homer of the season, which gave Centenary a 5-2 cushion.
Freshman Hillary Phillips (11-6) got the win, as she pitched a complete game four hitter. The Odessa, Texas, native allowed two runs, walked one and struck out a career-high 11 batters.
Game two
Sophomore Caitlin Cavarra, senior Emerald Doria and Bassett each had two hits, while Bassett also drove in two runs to lead the offense. Bassett singled in both of her RBIs in the second inning, which tied the game at two.
Freshman Jenny Varteressian scored the winning run after SDSU (7-26, 4-4) catcher Dani Broshar threw down to third in an attempt to pickoff Varteressian. The insurance run for Centenary came in the fifth when Doria came around to score from first on a throwing error by the pitcher.
The Ladies and Jackrabbits will close the series on Saturday afternoon beginning at 12:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on www.GoCentenary.comwith the pregame show starting at 11:55 a.m.
