Gents Stomp Steers 9-0 In Season Opener

Shreveport – The Centenary men's soccer team powered past the Texas College Steers 9-0 in a non-conference contest on Friday evening in its season opener at Atkins Field.
The Gents (1-0) won their season opener for the first time since the 2022 season as they took a 1-0 halftime over the Steers (0-1) and exploded for eight second-half goals to cruise the shutout win.
Centenary tied a division III program era (2011-present) record for goals in a game which it set last season in a 9-0 home win over the Mississippi University for Women (MUW) Owls.
The Gents also had seven assists, the second-most in a match in the D3 era, behind the eight they tallied in the 9-0 win last season over MUW. Their nine goals and seven assists on Friday totaled 25 points- the second-most in a match in the D3 era.
Junior F Fernando Santos (Bridgeport, Texas) started the scoring as he found the net just 7:32 into the match with the assist credited to sophomore F Jesse Lang (Austin, Texas) for a 1-0 lead.
Senior GK Sam Brocato (Leesville, La.) and the Gents' defense held the Steers scoreless as Brocato collected four saves and went the distance for his second-career shutout. Alan Garcia played the whole match in goal for the Steers and made five saves.
Junior D Dylan Clark (Allen, Texas) made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal in the 55th minute, Lang scored his first-career goal at the 58:18 mark as junior MF Jacob Ramsey (Baton Rouge, La.) assisted to make it 3-0, and junior D Aaron Gonzales (Atascocita, Texas) converted a penalty kick at the 62:55 mark for a 4-0 lead.
Freshman MF Joseph LeBoeuf (DeRidder, La.) scored his first-career goal, assisted by freshman MF Marco Peterson (Bedford, Texas) for a 5-0 lead in the 69th minute, then senior F Connor Buche (College Station, Texas) scored consecutive goals in the 70th minute, assisted by freshman D Aaron Thornley (Henderson, Texas) and at the 76-minute mark, assisted by freshman D/MF Bevan Flanagan (Murphy, Texas) to make it 7-0.
Junior Marco Zavala (Choluteca, Honduras) made it 8-0 in the 86th minute with the assist from freshman D Benjamin Ascuncion-Crabb (Belton, Texas), and freshman MF Matthew Hebert (Lafayette, La.) scored his first-career goal in the 88th minute to cap the scoring and make it 9-0 with the assist credited to senior MF Brandon Guevara (Henderson, Texas).
The Gents finished with a decisive 28-9 advantage in shots, had 14 shots on goal, and took 10 corner kicks to the Steers' four. The teams combined for 28 fouls in the match as the Gents were whistled for 17 and the Steers 11.
Centenary returns to action on Monday evening as the Maroon and White have another non-conference home contest against the Dallas Christian College Crusaders set for 7 PM at Atkins Field.
