Abilene, Texas – The Centenary men's soccer team is back on the road this weekend for a pair of non-conference matches beginning with a matchup versus the Hardin-Simmons University Cowboys on Thursday at 7:30 PM at the HSU Soccer Complex.
The Gents (2-1-1) and Cowboys (2-3) will meet for the first time since the 2011 season, a match that ended in a scoreless tie after two overtimes. Centenary leads the all-time series 8-4. Centenary is 0-1 on the road this season while Hardin-Simmons is 1-1 at home. The Cowboys are a member of the American Southwest Conference and won the conference championship last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Senior GK Sam Brocato (Leesville, La.) is off to a superb start to his season as he has recorded a conference-leading three shutouts and ranks in a tie for third nationally in division III. Brocato is also tied for 21st place nationally and second in the conference in saves (23) and in the top 100 nationally in save percentage (.852).
Brocato went the distance in goal for the Gents in Sunday's 1-0 win over the Lyon College Scots in a non-conference contest and made a season-high seven saves. Sophomore D Dylan Clark (Allen, Texas) buried a late penalty kick in the 85th minute after the Scots and Gents battled to a scoreless draw until Clark was fouled inside the box and rifled his PK attempt past Lyon GK Gabriel Rangel and into the back of the net.
Clark and senior F Connor Buche (College Station, Texas) are tied for the team lead in goals with two each, and seven players have scored one goal each - junior D Aidan Miller (Keller, Texas), junior F Fernando Santos (Bridgeport, Texas), junior D Aaron Gonzales (Atascocita, Texas), freshman MF Joseph LeBoeuf (DeRidder, La.), junior Marco Zavala (Choluteca, Honduras), freshman MF Matthew Hebert (Lafayette, La.), and sophomore F Jesse Lang (Austin, Texas).
Centenary tied a division III program era (2011-present) record for goals in a game in its 9-0 win over the Texas College Steers 9-0 to open the season on Aug. 30 and also had seven assists, the second-most in a match in the D3 era, behind the eight they tallied in a 9-0 win last season over MUW. Their nine goals and seven assists totaled 25 points- the second-most in a match in the D3 era.
Junior MF Jacob Ramsey (Baton Rouge, La.), freshman MF Marco Peterson (Bedford, Texas), freshman D Aaron Thornley (Henderson, Texas), freshman D/MF Bevan Flanagan (Murphy, Texas), freshman D Benjamin Ascuncion-Crabb (Belton, Texas), and senior MF Brandon Guevara (Henderson, Texas) all have one assist this season to tie for the team lead. Buche and Clark are tied for the team lead in points with four and Lang is right behind them with three.
