Gents Earn Draw At Howard Payne On Saturday
The Centenary men's soccer team finished in a 2-2 tie against the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets on Saturday evening in a non-conference match at Citizens National Bank Soccer Field.
Brownwood, Texas. – The Centenary men's soccer team finished in a 2-2 tie against the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets on Saturday evening in a non-conference match at Citizens National Bank Soccer Field.
The Gents (2-2-2) rebounded from a disappointing 4-2 loss at Hardin-Simmons University on Thursday evening in Abilene, Texas as they recorded their second tie of the young season. The Yellow Jackets stand at 0-5-1 after Saturday's draw and are 0-2-1 at home.
Junior F Carter Webb (Flower Mound, Texas) scored the first goal of the match in the 24th minute to give the Gents a 1-0 lead. Junior MF Jacob Ramsey (Baton Rouge, La.) assisted as Webb and Ramsey connected for the second-consecutive match after doing so against Hardin-Simmons on Thursday.
Centenary took the 1-0 lead into halftime and then Howard Payne then scored the next two goals, the first by Ethan Mauldin in the 50th minute with double assists credited to Zachary Hallman and Xzavier Saldana. The Yellow Jackets then took a 2-1 lead in the 84th minute on a penalty kick by Saldana.
The Gents, though, would not be denied as Ramsey found the net less than a minute later to knot the match at 2-2. The goal was Ramsey's first in his career and with his assist, he now leads the team this season with three.
Senior GK Sam Brocato (Leesville, La.) played all 90 minutes and made five saves. Adrian Villa also went the distance for the Yellow Jackets and tallied four saves.
The Gents edged the Yellow Jackets in shots, 13-12, and had six shots on goal to Howard Payne's 10. Centenary finished with an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks and the teams combined for 13 fouls – eight whistled on the Gents and five on the Yellow Jackets. There were seven cautions issues in the match- five yellow cards and a pair of red cards.
The Gents will return to action next Saturday with another non-conference contest versus the East Texas Baptist University Tigers at 7:30 PM in Marshall, Texas.
