Shreveport - The Centenary men's soccer team has been selected as Centenary Athletics' "Team of the Week" after the Gents went unbeaten last weekend in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play and extended its season-best winning streak to three.
The Gents (6-5-2, 4-2 SCAC) edged LeTourneau University, 2-1, on Friday in Longview, Texas and capped the perfect weekend with an impressive 4-1 victory over the Austin College 'Roos on Sunday afternoon at Atkins Field. Centenary, now 4-1-1 at home this season, has outscored its last three opponents 13-2, scored three or more goals in a match for the fourth time this season and held an opponent to one goal or less for the seventh time.
The Gents now have four conference wins which is their most in a single season since joining the SCAC prior to the 2012 season. The Gents' previous high for SCAC wins in a season was three accomplished four times (2016, 2019, 2020, and 2024).
Junior MF Jacob Ramsey (Baton Rouge, La.) had a big weekend as he tallied two goals and an assist. He recorded an assist in the win at LeTourneau on Friday and scored twice in the win over Austin College on Sunday. He opened the scoring as he found the net in the 20th minute, an unassisted score, for his third goal of the season to give the Gents an early 1-0 lead. Ramsey scored again in the 55th minute, sneaking the ball into the net on a beautiful goal to make it 3-0.
Centenary took that 1-0 lead into halftime and then in the opening minutes of the second half, senior F Gabriel Aragon (Forney, Texas) was fouled inside the box and converted a penalty kick to make it 2-0 at the 46:44 mark as he scored for the third time this season. Ramsey scored again in the 55th minute, sneaking the ball into the net on a beautiful goal off an assist from junior D Lochlan Scott (Glasgow, Scotland).
Sophomore MF Angel Montoya (Kyle, Texas) capped the scoring in the 80th minute, with an unassisted goal and his second of the season to make it 4-1. Senior GK Casey Clemo (Forney, Texas) started his fourth-straight match and picked up the win as he went the distance and recorded a season-high eight saves.
In Friday's win, junior D Hayden McConnell (Flower Mound, Texas) scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Ramsey in the 23rd minute for a 1-0 lead. The Gents took their 1-0 lead to halftime and until the 67th minute when LETU's Henry Shore found the net to tie the match at 1-1. But, in the 75th minute junior D Aidan Miller (Keller, Texas) scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal to make it 2-1 with the assist from junior D Lochlan Scott (Glasgow, Scotland).
Clemo was named the SCAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after he started both matches over the weekend, corralling 14 total saves as his efforts have lifted Centenary to three-straight SCAC wins for the first time in program history.
Ramsey is tied for the conference lead in assists, tied for fourth in points, and top 10 in goals. The Gents' 32 goals are tops in the conference and their 17 goals scored in conference play are also first in the league. The Maroon and White are tied for 34th nationally in goals scored (32), tied for 42nd nationally in goals per game (2.46), and tied for 58th in points (82).
The Gents are fighting for a berth into next month's conference tournament as the 2025 SCAC Men's Soccer Tournament returns to a six-team format for the first time since the 2020-21 COVID-19 shortened season. The tournament will be held the first week of November at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex in Round Rock, Texas. Quarterfinal matches will be contested on Thursday, Nov. 6, the semifinal matches on Friday, Nov. 7 and the championship match will be played Sunday, Nov. 9.
The Gents, picked to finish eighth in the preseason poll, are currently alone in fourth place in the conference standings and their four wins are tied for the most in the league with Colorado College (4-0-2) and Texas Lutheran University (4-1-1).
Centenary remains at home this weekend for a pair of league matches, facing the University of the Ozarks Eagles on Friday (7:30 PM) and Hendrix College on Sunday (2 PM). The Gents will honor their senior class prior to Friday's match.
