Gents Open SCAC Play With Road Win At McMurry
The Centenary men's soccer team opened Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with an impressive 3-1 victory over the McMurry University War Hawks on Friday night in the league opener for both teams inside Wilford Moore Stadium.
Abilene, Texas. – The Centenary men's soccer team opened Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with an impressive 3-1 victory over the McMurry University War Hawks on Friday night in the league opener for both teams inside Wilford Moore Stadium.
The Gents (3-3-2, 1-0 SCAC) won on the road for the first time this season and opened SCAC play with a win for the second season in a row. The War Hawks (2-5-1, 0-1-0) fell to 2-2 at home this season as the Gents now lead the all-time series 3-0.
Senior F Gabriel Aragon (Forney, Texas) gave the Gents an early lead as he converted a penalty kick in the seventh minute, scoring for the first time this season and the third time in his career. Junior F Fernando Santos (Bridgeport, Texas) made it 2-0 in the 18th minute as he found the net for the second time this season.
Centenary took that 2-0 lead to halftime where it stood until the 84th minute when junior MF Jacob Ramsey (Baton Rouge, La.) made it 3-0 with his second goal of the season. Pedro Yanez's PK in the 89th minute allowed the War Hawks to avoid the shutout and make it 3-1.
Senior GK Sam Brocato (Leesville, La.) went the distance to pick up the win but for the first time this season he did not record a save. The teams combined for just 11 shots – six by the War Hawks and five by the Gents. McMurry GK Jose Sanchez made one save in his 90 minutes while allowing all three goals.
The Gents, despite taking only five shots in the match, cashed in their limited opportunities for three goals and scored two or more goals for the fourth time this season. Centenary entered the match as the top offense in the conference, ranking first in goals, points, shots, and corner kicks, and second in assists. The Gents have now scored 18 goals and average 2.25/game
The Gents will face the Schreiner University Mountaineers (1-8-1, 0-1-0 SCAC) on Sunday at 2 PM in Kerrville, Texas. Schreiner was blanked 2-0 at home by the University of St. Thomas on Friday.
