LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Centenary Ladies Soccer junior Kyra Montes earned Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week accolades for the first time in her career Tuesday afternoon, September 4.
Montes scored the first goal of the season for the Ladies, and assisted on an insurance goal, as Centenary recorded a come-from-behind, 3-1 victory against Belhaven Saturday afternoon, September 1.
After trailing the Blazers 1-0 at the half, Montes leveled the contest when she found the back of the net in the 51st minute. Junior Betzabet Bravo found Montes at the top of the box. Montes shot beat the keeper for her fourth goal in a Centenary uniform. Montes later added an assist on sophomore Pamela Fonseca's goal in the 77th minute to put Centenary up 3-1.
The game-winning goal was scored by junior Emilee Byrd in the 71st minute. Freshman Veronica Dougherty, who was named the first Centenary Athlete of the Week of 2018-19 Tuesday, assisted on the tally. Dougherty helped lead a defensive charge that held Belhaven to only two shots on goal for the game – including none in the second half – to help the Ladies rally for the win.
Centenary returns to action Wednesday afternoon, September 5, when it hosts Millsaps. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
