Gents Fall At Berry In Season Opener
The Centenary men's basketball team fell 77-55 to the Berry College Vikings on Friday night in the season opener for both teams and a non-conference contest as part of the Viking Tip-Off Classic inside the Cage Center.
Rome, Ga. - The Centenary men's basketball team fell 77-55 to the Berry College Vikings on Friday night in the season opener for both teams and a non-conference contest as part of the Viking Tip-Off Classic inside the Cage Center.
The Gents (0-1) will face Pfeiffer University on Saturday at NOON central. Berry (1-0) will face Maryville College on Saturday at 3 PM.

Berry led just 29-25 at halftime but outscored the Gents 48-30 in the second half to seal the win. Centenary shot 33.3 % (20-60) from the floor, 17.2 % (5-29) from beyond the arc, and 83.3 % (10-12) at the free throw line. Berry finished 29-62 (46.8 %) from the floor, 25 % (7-28) from 3-point range, and 66.7 % (12-18) at the FT line. Berry won the rebounding battle 46-29 and each team turned the ball over 12 times.
The Gents finished with eight steals, five assists, and a blocked shot and the Vikings tallied nine steals, eight assists, and did not block a shot. Berry won the battle inside, finishing with a 44-24 advantage in points in the paint and had nine second-chance points to the Gents' five. Centenary finished with 15 points off of turnovers and Berry had 14, the Vikings scored 11 fast break points and the Gents scored four. The Gents finished with 32 bench points and the Vikings had 24.
Senior G Craig Collier (North Little Rock, Ark.) led all scorers with 27 points as he finished 9-18 from the floor in 27 minutes. He was 7-8 at the FT line with a pair of treys, three rebounds, two steals, and an assist.
Freshman G/F Kane Broussard (Iowa, La.) scored eight points, sophomore G Nicholas Addison (Cedar Hill, Texas) had six, and junior F Dontarius Coleman (Gibsland, La.) had five. Freshman G Jaden Braden (Natchitoches, La.) scored four, freshman C Bryce Evans (Austin, Texas), and senior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas) scored two.
Addison led the Gents with nine rebounds, Evans grabbed five, and Coleman and Collier each had three. Beverly and Braden each had a pair and Broussard and sophomore G Trenton Thomas (Cedar Hill, Texas) each had one.
Three Vikings scored in double figures, led by 17 from Nile King. Canon Armstead had 11 and Drew Winegarden scored 10. Mason Lawrence and Bennett Frazer each scored eight and Cameron Pops chipped in seven.
Berry jumped out to a 9-2 lead early in the game and stretched it to 15-5 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half, but Centenary went on a 20-10 run to tie the game at 25-25 on a jumper by Beverly with 1:04 left before halftime. A pair of FT's and a tip-in just before the first-half buzzer broke the tie and gave the Vikings a 29-25 lead at the break.
Collier made a layup just seconds into the second half to make it 29-27 but when Armstead nailed a trey at the 17:04 mark of the second half, it extended the Berry lead back to double digits at 40-29. The Gents then did not score until Collier hit a jumper at the 14:34 mark to make it 48-31. Berry then maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way to cruise to the win.
