The Gents (0-2) started their season on the road last weekend with a pair of tough non-conference contests, falling to Berry College (77-55) and Pfeiffer University (78-77) as part of the Viking Tip-Off Classic in Rome, Ga. Friday marks the home debut for first-year head coach J.A. Anglin.
The Tigers (0-3) lost at home to McMurry University in their season opener on Nov. 7 and have also dropped games to Belhaven University (78-70) and the University of St. Thomas (72-64). The Gents and Tigers are meeting for the first time since Nov. 12, 2022 when ETBU recorded a 95-76 victory in Marshall, Texas.
Senior G Craig Collier (North Little Rock, Ark.) had a big weekend for the Gents as he averaged 19.5 PPG, coming off in the bench in both games, and averaged 25.2 minutes per game as he finished 48.3 % from the floor and 87.5 % from the free-throw line. He hit four treys and had three rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Collier scored 27 in the season opener against Berry as he finished 9-18 from the floor and 7-8 at the FT line and then had 12 points the next day against Pfeiffer.
Senior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas) was held to just two points against Berry but responded with 24 points against Pfeiffer in 34 minutes on 7-20 shooting from the floor with four treys. Sophomore G Nicholas Addison (Cedar Hill, Texas) scored six against Berry and came back with 19 points in the Pfeiffer game as he was 9-11 from the floor in 26 minutes. Addison is the Gents' leading rebounder (8.5 RPG) and junior F Dontarius Coleman (Gibsland, La.) is right behind him at 6.5/game.
Addison leads the way in assists (2.5/game) and Collier and freshman G Jaden Braden (Natchitoches, La.) are averaging 1.5/game. The aggressive Addison also leads the team in steals (2.5/game) and blocks per game (1.0). The Gents have been strong at the FT line through two games, making 20-26 for 76.9 %.
Friday's game is the first of 11 at home this season for Centenary as the Gents aim to continue their recent impressive play at the Gold Dome as they are 63-29 there over the last eight seasons and 80-39 in the last decade. The Gents will remain at home to face Arlington Baptist University on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 8 PM.
The Gents were picked to finish ninth in the SCAC Preseason Poll this season. The top six teams in the conference will qualify for the SCAC Men's Basketball Tournament, which will be held February 27 through March 1 and hosted by Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. The winner of that event will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
