Gents Fall On Friday Night At Howard Payne

Brownwood, Texas - The Centenary men's basketball team fell 103-82 to the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets on Friday evening in a non-conference game inside Brownwood Coliseum.
The Gents (1-7) trailed the Yellow Jackets (9-3) by a score of 52-41 at halftime and were outscored 51-41 in the second half.
Senior G Craig Collier (North Little Rock, Ark.) led all scorers with 28 points and was one of three Gents to reach double figures as he was joined by freshman G Jaden Braden (Natchitoches, La.) who had a season-high 17 and senior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas) added 13.
Sophomore G Nicholas Addison (Cedar Hill, Texas) scored eight points in 28 minutes on 4-6 shooting with six rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Freshman G/F Kane Broussard (Iowa, La.) added five points in his 23 minutes on 2-6 shooting with one trey, three rebounds, and two assists. Freshman C Bryce Evans (Austin, Texas) had three points and an assist in 19 minutes.
Junior F Dontarius Coleman (Gibsland, La.) matched his season high of eight points in 21 minutes as he was 3-5 from the field with five rebounds. He was 1-1 at the FT line with one trey and added two assists.
Armonie Ramey scored 27 points to lead four Yellow Jackets in double figures as he was joined by Ben Phillip (21), Trey Jackson (15), and Jordan McClendon (13). Jackson Tomlin, Nathan Scott, and Jaime Puentes all scored five and Braylon Crosby added four.
Centenary shot an impressive 42.0 % (29-69) from the floor and made a season-high 13 treys in 31 attempts for a season-high 41.9 %. The Gents were 11-16 from the FT line for 68.8 % and finished with 25 rebounds, 14 assists, six steals, and 15 turnovers.
Howard Payne was a sizzling 55.7 % (34-61) from the floor, 11-26 from beyond the arc (42.3 %), and 24-29 at the FT line for 82.8 %. The Yellow Jackets finished with 48 rebounds, 16 assists, nine steals, one blocked shot, and 17 turnovers.
The Yellow Jackets won the battle inside as they finished with a 36-22 advantage in points in the paint, 11-3 in second-chance points, and 4-0 in fastbreak points. The Gents finished with a 16-12 edge in points off turnovers and 26-32 in bench points.
Howard Payne started fast and took a commanding 20-3 lead at the 14:55 mark of the first half and stretched its lead to 30-8 at the 12:31 mark. The Gents finally reached the double-digit mark with 11:57 remaining as Addison made a layup to make it 30-10.
Collier sank a pair of FT's at the 7:21 mark to make it 39-26 and cap a 16-9 run. A three-point play by Collier with 3:24 mark cut Centenary's deficit to single digits at 44-35 and then the teams traded backets over the final three minutes as Howard Payne led by 11 at halftime.
A jumper by Braden cut the Gents' deficit to just seven at 66-59 with 14:42 left in the second half, but the Maroon and White were unable to get any closer as the Yellow Jackets finished with a 10-point advantage in the half to seal the win.
The Gents return to action next Friday at home against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 6 PM in the Gold Dome.
