Gents Rally Late But Fall 74-71 To Patriots At Home

Shreveport - The Centenary men's basketball team rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half but could not the complete the comeback and fell 74-71 to the Arlington Baptist University Patriots in a non-conference contest on Tuesday night inside the Gold Dome.
The Gents (0-4) trailed the Patriots (2-3) by a score of 40-34 at halftime and the Gents edged them 37-34 in the second half. Both teams shot the ball well as Centenary finished 30-70 from the floor for 42.9 % and Arlington Baptist was 26-61 for 42.6 %. The Gents shot an even 40 % in the first half but the Patriots were even better, finishing at a 50 % clip. The Patriots cooled down after halftime as they shot 34.5 % and the Gents finished 45.7 %.
Centenary outrebounded Arlington Baptist 43-38 and won the battle in the paint, 42-34. The Gents edged the Patriots in second-chance points, 11-10, and each team scored eight fast break points and had 15 bench points. Centenary had season highs in assists – 15, steals (9), and blocked shots (5). Arlington Baptist finished with 11 steals and eight assists and did not block a shot. The Patriots turned the ball over 19 times to the Gents' 18 and ABU scored 21 points off of TO's while Centenary had 10. The Game featured 12 lead changes and six times.
Five Gents reached double figures, led by freshman G/F Kane Broussard (Iowa, La.) who had a season-high 17 points. Sophomore G Nicholas Addison (Cedar Hill, Texas) and senior G Craig Collier (North Little Rock, Ark.) each scored 13, freshman G Jaden Braden (Natchitoches, La.) scored 11, and senior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas) had 10. Freshman C Bryce Evans (Austin, Texas) added five and junior F Dontarius Coleman (Gibsland, La.) had two.
Broussard added a game-high 13 rebounds for an impressive double-double and Addison grabbed 11 as he also recorded a double-double. Broussard played all 40 minutes and was 6-14 from the floor and 2-2 from the FT line with three treys. He added three steals, two assists, and a pair of blocked shots. Addison played 32 minutes and was 6-9 from the floor with three assists and three steals.
Collier was 6-12 from the floor in 32 minutes with three assists, two steals, and a blocked shot and Braden was 5-9 from the floor with one trey in 35 minutes with two rebounds and three assists. Beverly played 37 minutes and grabbed for rebounds with four assists, a blocked shot, and a steal.
Jamar McCary led all scorers with 22 points and Gary Gray scored 20. Joseph McCray and Marcel Dalcourt each scored nine and the Patriots got six points each from Kam Ware and Zion Bourgeois. Dalcourt and Gray each grabbed nine boards to lead the way in rebounding for the Patriots.
The Patriots held leads of 26-21 with 8:08 remaining in the first half and 33-27 at the 5:33 mark and a layup by Joseph McCray gave the Patriots their first double-digit lead at 38-28 with 4:07 left. Centenary closed the half on a 6-2 run to make it 40-34 at halftime.
ABU led 57-47 after a Jamar McCary jumper with 11:36 remaining but the Gents stormed back and went on a 17-7 run to tie the game at 64-64 on a layup by Addison. The Patriots then scored the next five points to lead 69-64 with 1:36 left and made multiple FT's in the final minute to secure the win.
The Gents return to action next Tuesday against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 5:30 PM in Belton, Texas.
