Gents Lose To Cru At Home On Friday Night
The Centenary men's basketball team lost 91-75 to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Cru in a non-conference contest on Friday evening inside the Gold Dome.
Shreveport- The Centenary men's basketball team lost 91-75 to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Cru in a non-conference contest on Friday evening inside the Gold Dome.
The Gents (1-8) fell behind the Cru (7-4) by a score of 43-35 at halftime and were outscored 48-40 in the second half. Four players reached double figures for Centenary, led by 25 from senior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas). Freshman G/F Kane Broussard (Iowa, La.) had 15, freshman C Bryce Evans (Austin, Texas) scored 13, and senior G Craig Collier (North Little Rock, Ark.) added 12.
The Cru also had four players score in double figures, led by 22 from Elijah Lawrence. Hudson Johnson was right behind him with 21, Zachary Engels had 13 and Grant Jessen 12.
Centenary shot 38.8 % (26-67) from the floor for the game, 43.3 % (13-30) from beyond the arc, and 76.9 % (10-13) from the free-throw line. UMHB shot 43.6 % (34-78) from the field, 33.3 % (10-30) from beyond the arc, and 68.4 % (13-19) from the FT line. The Gents recorded 16 assists, seven blocked shots, and two assists while the Cru tallied 14 assists, four steals, and a pair of blocks.
UMHB finished with a decisive advantage in rebounds (61-31) and had 21 second-chance points to Centenary's seven. The Cru also finished with a 40-18 edge in points in the paint, scored 16 fast break points, and got 24 points from its bench.
The Gents had six fast break points and their bench contributed 14 points. Centenary turned the ball over just seven times which led to seven points for UMHB and the Cru gave it away 13 times which the Gents turned into 15 points. The game featured eight ties and six lead changes but Centenary only led for 1:23 while UMHB held the lead for 35:47.
After four early ties, the Cru went on an 8-0 run to break a 12-12 tie and take a 20-12 lead at the 10:51 mark on a Jessen layup. Junior F Dontarius Coleman (Gibsland, La.) made a jumper at the 10:03 mark to snap the UMHB run and give the Gents their first points since a jumper by Broussard with 14:53 on the clock. Collier then nailed a trey to make it 20-17 with 9:19 remaining before halftime but UMHB responded with six straight points to take a 26-17 lead with 8:11 on the clock.
Lawrence made a layup with 5:41 on the clock to extend the UMHB to double digits (33-23) but the Gents answered with a 12-5 run to cut their deficit to three at 38-35 with 1:12 remaining after a trey by Evans. Hudson Johnson, though, scored the final five points of the half for the Cru to give them their eight-point lead (43-35) at halftime.
Coleman played 10 minutes off the bench and added two assists and a rebound, sophomore G Nicholas Addison (Cedar Hill, Texas) had a solid all-around game with five points, five assists, four blocks, and a steal in 33 minutes. He matched Lawrence in assists with five to lead all players and his four blocks were a game high. Freshman G Jaden Braden (Natchitoches, La.) scored three points in 21 minutes and had three assists and one rebound.
Beverly played 37 minutes and was 9-23 from the floor, 5-10 from beyond the arc, and 2-3 from the FT line and added four rebounds and two assists. Beverly reached double figures for the eighth time in nine games this season and scored 20+ points for the third time.
Broussard scored in double figures for the second time and was just two points shy of his season high of 17 that he scored last month against Arlington Baptist University. He played 35 minutes and was 5-8 from the floor, 2-3 from beyond the arc, and 3-4 from the FT line. He added seven rebounds and a steal.
Evans was 4-11 from the floor, 3-7 from beyond the arc, and 2-2 from the FT line in 34 minutes with seven boards, three blocks, and two assists. Collier came off the bench and played 27 minutes and was 4-11 from the floor, 2-5 from beyond the arc, and 2-2 at the FT line and added four rebounds and two assists.
Evans hit a 3-pointer to cut the Gents' deficit to 46-42 at the 17:38 mark but a layup by Engels extended the UMHB lead to 54-44 at the 15:45 mark. The Gents were able to get the lead to single digits on multiple occasions, but the Cru answered each time and built their lead back to double figures and eventually took an 89-70 lead at the 2:41 mark – their biggest lead of the night.
The Gents return to action on Dec. 30 for an exhibition game at Grambling State University set for NOON in Grambling, La.
Centenary's next regular-season action will be on Friday, Jan. 2 (5:30 PM) against LeTourneau University at home in conference play.
