The Gents (1-8, 0-1 SCAC) fell 90-58 to the Grambling State University Tigers in an exhibition contest on Tuesday afternoon in Grambling while the YellowJackets (6-3, 1-0 SCAC) defeated Lewis and Clark at home on Dec. 20 by a score of 94-82. Centenary's last regular season competition was a 91-75 loss to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in a non-conference contest on Dec. 19 at home.
The Gents and YellowJackets are meeting for the second time this season after LeTourneau edged Centenary 63-62 in the league opener for both teams on Dec. 2 in Longview, Texas. The Gents took a 62-60 lead on a jumper by senior G Craig Collier (North Little Rock, Ark.) with just 36 seconds remaining but a 3-pointer by Connor Miller with 26 seconds left was the winning basket for the YellowJackets.
Centenary enters Friday's action in search of its first home win of the season as the loss to UMHB on Dec. 19 was preceded by setbacks against Arlington Baptist University (74-71) on Nov. 18 and East Texas Baptist University (73-67) on Nov. 14. LeTourneau is 0-1 on the road this season, falling 89-82 at Hardin-Simmons University on Dec. 6.
The Gents average 68.3 PPG, shoot 40.6 % from the floor, 28.6 % from 3-point range, and 72.3 % from the free-throw line while averaging 32.7 rebounds/game, 10.0 assists/game, 6.4 steals/game, and 2.6 blocks/game. Centenary's defense has been solid and tested against a difficult schedule through nine games, as the Gents rank fifth in the conference in scoring defense (78.2 PPG) and are third in 3-point FG % defense (30.3) which ranks 109th nationally. Four of the Gents' eight losses have been by six points or less with a pair of one-point losses.
The LeTourneau offense will test Centenary's stingy defense as the YellowJackets are 17th nationally in scoring offense as they average 88.3 PPG which is second in the SCAC behind Concordia University. Both Centenary and LeTourneau are strong at the FT line as the visitors lead the conference (78.8) and rank eighth in the country and the Gents' 72.3 % checks in at 104th in all of division III.
Senior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas) is the Gents' leading scorer at 15.8 PPG and Collier is next at 14.3 PPG. Sophomore G Nicholas Addison (Cedar Hill, Texas) and freshman G Jaden Braden (Natchitoches, La.) each average 9.8 PPG and freshman G/F Kane Broussard (Iowa, La.) is averaging 7.4 PPG. Freshman C Bryce Evans (Austin, Texas) averages 6.0 PPG and junior F Dontarius Coleman (Gibsland, La.) is at 3.8 PPG.
Beverly and Collier both rank in the top 15 in the league in scoring as Beverly is tied for 12th and Collier is tied for 17th. LeTourneau's Jackson Mayes (21.7 PPG) leads the team in scoring and ranks third in the conference and is tied for 42nd nationally. Teigan Edwards (15.8 PPG) is tied for 12th in the league with Beverly and is the second leading scorer for the YellowJackets.
Addison is the Gents' leading rebounder (7.2/game) and ranks ninth in the league and is the team leader in FG % (54.9) which is good for seventh in the conference while Collier (78.3) is the Gents' top FT shooter as he is tied for 11th in the league. Addison's 1.6 steals/game also lead the team and are 15th in the SCAC and he is 11th in blocked shots/game (0.8), Beverly and Collier are also both ranked in the top 15 in 3-point FG made, and Evans leads the team and is tied for seventh in the conference in blocked shots (1/0/game). Beverly is third in the league in minutes played as he averages a team-best 34.1 minutes/game.
In the previous meeting between the two teams back on Dec. 2, Centenary led 34-32 at halftime and had three players finish in double figures as Addison led the way with 15, Beverly had 14, and Braden added 13. Connor Miller and Jackson Mayes each had 19 to lead the YellowJackets.
The Gents held leads of 55-50 at the 8:00 mark and 57-50 with 7:43 left. A trey by Jak Kinder and a basket by Miller made it 57-55 with 5:39 remaining. Addison then made a layup at the 5:18 mark to make it 59-55 and Collier hit 1-2 at the FT line to make it 60-55 Gents. Mayes' layup made it 60-57 and Miller's trey tied the game at 60-60 with 2:24 left. Five missed shots followed until Collier's jumper made it 62-60 with 36 seconds remaining but 10 seconds later, Miller's trey made it 63-62. The Gents called a timeout and Beverly's last-second shot just missed as the YellowJackets escaped with the win.
The Gents were picked to finish ninth in the SCAC Preseason Poll this season while the YellowJackets predicted to finish fourth. The top six teams in the conference will qualify for the SCAC Men's Basketball Tournament, which will be held February 27 through March 1 and hosted by Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. The winner of that event will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
