Gents Edged At Schreiner On Sunday 68-65
The Centenary men's basketball team was edged 68-65 by the Schreiner University Mountaineers on Sunday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside Stephens Family Arena.

The Gents (2-10, 1-3 SCAC) were down seven points to the Mountaineers (7-6, 4-0 SCAC) with just under three minutes to play before finishing the game on a 6-2 run but came up just short. Centenary was aiming for an unbeaten weekend after defeating the McMurry University War Hawks by a score of 94-89 on Friday evening in Abilene, Texas.
Senior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas) led all scorers with 27 points and eclipsed 1,000 career points on Sunday after scoring 30 on Friday night. Beverly reached double figures for the 11th game in a row as he has scored 20+ points five times this season.
The Gents shot 36.2 % (21-58) from the floor, 30.8 % (8-26) from beyond the arc, and 75 % (15-20) from the free-throw line while the Mountaineers went 41.2 % (28-68) from the field, 23.1 % (6-26) from 3-point range, and 6-10 (60 %) from the FT line and Schreiner won the rebounding battle 48-35. The Gents finished with nine assists, seven steals, and three blocked shots and the Mountaineers recorded 21 assists, six steals, and three blocked shots. Schreiner committed 10 turnovers and Centenary had eight and the game featured 12 lead changes and seven ties. Schreiner's largest lead of the game was seven points while Centenary's was six.
Schreiner finished with a 38-16 advantage in points in the paint, 12-3 in second-chance points, and 27-3 in bench points. The Gents turned Schreiner's 10 turnovers into 16 points while the Mountaineers scored eight points from Centenary's eight turnovers. The Gents also finished with a 14-6 advantage in fast break points. Centenary, which only turned the ball over one time in Friday's win over McMurry, has now have finished with single-digit turnovers four times this season.
Beverly played 36 minutes and was 9-18 from the floor, 2-6 from 3-point range, and 7-10 from the FT line with three rebounds and an assist, sophomore G Nicholas Addison (Cedar Hill, Texas) recorded an impressive double-double with 12 points and a season-high 14 rebounds. He was 4-7 from the floor and 4-6 at the FT line in 34 minutes with three assists, three steals, and a blocked shot. Addison reached double figures in scoring for the fourth time, recorded his third double digit rebounding performance, and second double-double this season.
Freshman G/F Kane Broussard (Iowa, La.) finished with nine points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a pair of blocked shots in 30 minutes. He was 3-10 from the floor, as all of his made baskets were from beyond the arc. Freshman C Bryce Evans (Austin, Texas) scored eight points in 31 minutes on 2-7 shooting. He was 2-6 from beyond the arc and 2-2 at the FT line with three rebounds, two blocks, an assist, and a steal.
Freshman G Jaden Braden (Natchitoches, La.) had six points, two steals, a blocked shot, and one rebound in 31 minutes and junior F Dontarius Coleman (Gibsland, La.) had three points and three boards in 15 minutes.
Dylan Snow led the Mountaineers in scoring with 19 points and was the lone Schreiner player to reach double figures. Carson Diamond had nine, Hudson Czarnecki had eight, and three players scored seven points each – Mario Johnson, Camden Hyman, and Nick Nuedorfer. Noah Drenth added five and Justin Gooden and Mason McGown each scored three. Johnson grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Schreiner and Diamond pulled down nine.
Schreiner scored the first four points of the game but Centenary went on a 10-4 run as Beverly scored seven of the points and the Gents led by six with 16:29 on the clock. The Mountaineers went on a 13-5 run to reclaim the lead at 17-15 with 10:21 left before halftime and extended it to 20-15 at the 8:32 mark. But, an 8-0 run by the Gents gave them a 23-20 advantage at the 6:23 mark. Schreiner then outscored Centenary 8-5 over the next three+ minutes to tie the game at 28-28 with 2:39 remaining. The teams then traded baskets over the final two minutes as the Gents went into the locker room at the half up by a point at (33-32).
McGowan hit a 3-pointer to give the Mountaineers a 35-32 lead just over a minute into the second half as it marked Schreiner's first advantage since a 20-19 lead with 7:05 left in the first half. The teams traded baskets until a Johnson trey at the 15:39 mark made it 43-38 Schreiner. Centenary, though, followed with an 8-2 run to take a 46-45 led with 13:41 mark on a trey by Beverly.
Centenary led 52-47 with 12:36 remaining but Schreiner scored the next five points to tie the score at 52-52 with 10:04 remaining in the game. The Mountaineers used a 10-3 run to lead 62-55 at the 6:17 mark and led 66-59 with just 2:52 remaining in the game. The Gents, however, would not go away as Broussard connected on a trey to make it 66-62 with 1:51 left and Beverly sank a pair of free throws with 1:20 on the clock.
Snow then missed a jumper with 1:04 left and Centenary rebounded. Braden missed a jumper with 48 seconds left and Johnson rebounded for Schreiner. Gooden then turned the ball over as Addison recorded a steal and Beverly was fouled by Gooden with 10 seconds left. He made 1-2 at the FT line to make it a 66-65 game but after missing the second, Snow sank a pair at the line to ice the game as Schreiner prevailed, 68-65.
The Gents will be back on the road next weekend in conference play as they face Austin College on Friday night at 6 Pm in Sherman, Texas and the University of Dallas on Saturday in Irving, Texas (4 PM).
